Andrew was trained as a chemical engineer and spent 5 years as a production manager before earning his MBA and joining BCG's Auckland office in 1991. In his first 3 years, he worked on strategy and operations projects and for pulp and paper, financial services, and dairy manufacturing clients. One of the highlights was devising a strategy for the New Zealand Rugby Football Union and co-authoring a report on the future of the game. In 1995, Andrew moved to Jakarta with his wife and daughter because they thought a stint in Asia would be exciting. They haven't been disappointed. They experienced the country's frenzied economic growth, the subsequent monetary crisis, and the rapid expansion of BCG's local office and client base. Most importantly, they welcomed the birth of their son in 1998. Andrew finds working in Indonesia both challenging and rewarding. With the lingering after-effects of the late 90s economic crisis, the country is facing the immense political challenge of becoming a real democracy after 30 years of autocratic leadership. This huge, complex, long-term task gives BCG the opportunity to help shape the companies and institutions that will drive the recovery of the country for years to come. |
